Just recently you may remember that I was nominated for Best New Blog at the British Plus Size Awards – something I wrote all about just HERE. Now I didn’t win, but I’m super cool with that because one of my most favourite people and one of my friends did – everyone, meet HAYLEY FROM CURVES AND CURLS!
Hello there gorgeous! Thank you for taking the time out to have a chat! Congratulations on your win, you must be over the moon! How does it feel to be an award winning blogger?
It feels a bit surreal but wonderful! The competition was really stiff in this category (as you know!!) so being nominated was already awesome, and to win was brilliant.
Thank you, I am absolutely in love with that dress! I go to something like this so seldom that I knew I wanted the perfect dress – somewhere between princess and goddess haha! – but I wasn’t sure where I was going to find that. Dynasty swooped in to the rescue. I think there are definitely more options for these sort of events now than there were a few years ago, and there were an amazing array of gorgeous gowns on display on Saturday night. There are also things in a range of prices meaning that gorgeous glamour is so much more available. But I think we still get that fear that we might turn up in the same dress as someone else, so more choice is always welcome. I’d love to see some more choices incorporated into High Street ranges too, to be honest.
I’d never heard of Dynasty before, so finding you wearing their gown was brilliant for me – another brand to add to my list! I found it tough to find the right dress too, but Scarlett and Jo came to the rescue and gave me this incredible velvet gown, which they kindly customised with some sparkles to make it one of a kind, just for me!
Anyway, enough about me – you’ve had a whirlwind of a year! What’s been your highlights?
Wow, this year has been a total whirlwind, but winning the award was incredible. I’ve also been to a lot of plus size events this year: Style XL, Curvy Con, UK Plus Size Fashion Week, Curve Fashion Festival… Each one is a chance to meet other women and really soak up that community vibe that is the best thing about having started my blog. I got to model for Scarlett and Jo this year (along with your gorgeous self!) which was a great experience.
When I did my first lingerie post that was a pretty big moment for me. At the beginning if the year it would never have occurred to me I’d be doing lingerie posts by September. That was a huge deal for me. I felt like I’d broken through one of my own barriers.
This year I’ve felt my own confidence blossom, and watched it happen to others and that is an awesome thing to behold!
It’s so true, watching other people become confident whilst also growing yourself is one of the most rewarding things ever! I know my confidence has grown a lot thanks to the influences of some other brilliant bloggers – what about you? Who are your blogging influences?
I have a lot, so this is going to take a while! I think you can be inspired by people for different reasons. I absolutely love Fuller Figure Fuller Bust‘s style, and am not embarrassed to say she is one of the reasons I’m such a vintage lady nowadays and her blog and how it helped my confidence was one of the reasons I started mine.
Caroline of CurvyWordy writes a blog which is like a lingerie Bible and she had helped so many women, through her blog and in real life (including me!), find that holy grain / the perfectly fitting bra. It’s very selfless – she’s pretty much on a one woman mission!
Georgina Grogan from She Might Be Loved is a total social media queen and whenever anyone has a technical question, she is happy to spend ages explaining and teaching. And she’s over a decade younger than me. It’s embarrassing Haha!
I think the community would be lost without Debz from The Not So Secret Diary of aWannabe Princess – she consistently holds brands to account and cries out for more inclusivity and more choice. It’s a hard job and she does it for women all of the country, and I was so pleased when she won on Saturday at the awards for her #WeAreTheThey campaign.
Tanya from Secret Plus Size Goddess has been on the most incredible journey over the last year and she is a major inspiration to me. Her blog posts are frank but positive, and she is proof that you can be who you want to be whenever you like, you just have to have the courage to make a change.
And finally you miss Lottie (Oh god, it’s a love in!). I love your edgy, streetwise style, that always has a pretty slant, and you write in a way I appreciate – you talk about the clothes but you also give something of yourself. Love it!
You little babe! It is a right little love in and I LOVE IT. Come here, it’s time for a cuddle! So now you are one of those inspirational bloggers too – do you have any tips for any budding would-be-new bloggers out there?
Wow, that’s a tough one. I think getting out there on social media is important. That’s how you build followers and interact with them, which for me is a big bonus to blogging – chatting to the people who read your blog.
And stay true to your blog’s intentions. It’s easy to get distracted by potential freebies, or worry you should be doing things that other bloggers are doing. But you know why you started your blog, and whatever you’re doing is the reason people keep reading. So stick to your mission.
Wise words there Hayley! I think you’re on a roll, so whilst you’re feeling wise – tell us about your style staples and any style trends to look out for next season.
SS16 is going to be all about the 70’s again. So lots of awesome chintzy prints, fringing, suede. All that yummy stuff. My main style tip is always wear what you love and what you feel comfortable in. For the winter my key items are always a coat I feel fabulous in as you’re gonna be wearing that baby a lot! And faux fur. You just can’t get enough faux fur, and it adds a bit of glamour to any outfit. My style staples are a fifties inspired swing dress, black winged eyeliner, red lips and big hair. I love big earrings and fun clutch bags too. I like my style to be sweet but sexy, with a little bit of silly thrown in every now and again.
You are a fountain of knowledge as always! Well, I’ll let you go back to the life of an award winner – any words before you go?
