What Shoe Lookin’ At?!

Admittedly, shoes are not high on my list of fashion priorities. I have got better at increasing my shoe collection but faced with a choice between a new top and some new shoes, I would defo pick the top. My shoe collection starts and ends with 3 pairs of sandals, one pair of boots and one pair of flats. I did just recently buy myself some strappy heels, but I’ve not been brave enough to wear them yet, and they are a rather safe shade of black. I really need to be more adventurous!

I strongly believe you are either a shoe person or a bag person… unless you are one of the lucky (or unlucky, depending on how your bank manager views it) people who have a fetish for both. I am firmly in the bag person camp. The sight of a Vivienne Westwood bag or Mary Katrantzou clutch is enough to reduce me to a quivering mess. Being a bag lady (not that kind) doesn’t mean that I am unwilling to change though – so I got to thinking, and got to reading.

So since when did shoes become such an integral part of our outfits? Girls (not like me) everywhere covet huge shoe collections, salivate over designer shoe brands and spend all their hard earned cash on getting the Kim-Kardashian-esque shoe closet of dreams. Now I have always appreciated a pretty shoe – I have a particular fondness with Jeremy Campbell’s range of eccentric yet delicious shoes – but when it comes to actually purchasing them, I always manage to talk myself round. “Will they go with all the shades of black I wear?” I ask myself – the answer is almost always yes, but then I just turn a blind eye to them anyway and toddle off to the nearest bag section. Like I said, I really need to be more adventurous!

So being a budding fashionista, I decided to get educated and have a look at the journey of the shoe through fashion eras – surely it hasn’t been all mental heel height and unwearable patterns all the time?! I’m a massive bargain hunter so when I came across FarFetch.com (a community of over 300 luxury boutiques for you to bargain hunt and shop in from around the globe), I had to have a bit of a nosey. I had a chat to the nice people behind the luxury fashion website FarFetch.com about the history of shoes, and they provided me with this very informative piece which I thought you fellow non-shoe-obsessed babes might like (and definitely what you shoe-obsessed babes would like!). It’s really interesting to me to see how fashion has changed throughout the years!

After reading this, I’ve gained a whole new perspective on shoes – it’s not just the weird and wonderful, it’s the timeless classics that provide wearable glamour that can draw a person in. I definitely think I’m more of a pin-up perfection kind of girl – Lady Gaga can keep her mental shoes, I want wearable glamour! Oh goodness, I think I’m reformed…

What do you think mega babes? What era do you think you would have fit into?
