When it comes to make up, I am pretty much set in my ways. I won’t stray from my normal mascara, eyeliner and blusher combo and it’s only recently that I’ve started experimenting with my eyebrows and highlighter. But when it comes to lip colour, I am more than happy to try anything once, so when I saw a new Cruelty Free make up brand being introduced to the market with super low prices, I just had to give it a go.
Freedom Makeup comes from the same company that brought you Makeup Revolution, so if you have used their products before, you’ll know to expect high pigments and low, low prices. Freedom Makeup promises to give you Professional Performance Makeup for a fraction of the price, so I decided to give them a run for their money and made myself an order of some lipsticks and a couple of ‘Pro Lip Melts’.
I’ve been on the look out for a nice, nude-ish coloured lipstick for a while and when I saw Whispers, I thought I might have found it. The picture on the website looked promising as I have naturally quite olive tones (although by the picture above, you can see that I am quite tanned at the moment) and pinky colours tend to wash me out quite a bit so with Whispers having a more browny tone to it, I hoped that it would match my natural lip colour well enough and just highlight it enough to make my lips ‘pop’.
When it arrived and I opened it up, the product was darker than I had seen on the website. There was more of a pinker tone to it than I had hoped so I wasn’t feeling particularly confident about how this would look on my skin, but I tried it on anyway.
I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised with how the colour looked on me. I felt it wasn’t too pinky and it was warm enough for me to wear this as an everyday shade – this one is a keeper for me! The lipstick itself, as well as all the other lipsticks in the range I tried on, are creamy and feel moisturising on my lips. They didn’t dry them out and felt luxurious on my lips, however they don’t have much staying power, and I had to reapply a few times during the day.
Game On! is a summery coral colour and having seen some amazing coral shades on some of my other favourite bloggers just recently, I wanted to give it a go!
When it arrived, Game On! looked exactly like it did on the website, if not a little bit more vibrant. I was worried what this would look like against my skintone and my dark hair, so when I whipped it on, I was ready for a more jarring look – especially as I am used to wearing more bold colours such as red and purple on my lips!
This was only a fraction lighter than Whispers, but had the same high quality feel as it too. I didn’t like this one against my skin tone and put my long black hair into play and I just looked a bit washed out. This one isn’t for me unfortunately, but at £1.00 a pop, I couldn’t go wrong!
Pro Lipstick – Pro Red 109 Red Wine – £1.00
So I am a sucker for a red lippy. I’m a fiend for the MAC shades Ruby Woo and Crave so when I saw this dark wine coloured shade on the website (also part of a buy 4, get the 5th free promo which I managed to resist!) I just had to give it a go.
When I got the lipstick this was actually the first one I tried because I just fell in love with it. The colour looked lighter than it did on the website and again felt amazing on my lips. I did have to reapply twice to get a good enough colour, however.
Although it felt amazing on just like the other two shades, the pigment wasn’t as vibrant as I had expected. This hasn’t knocked off my favourite reds from their pedestals unfortunately, but it will stay in my handbag as an emergency lippie for last minute dates!
One of my go-to colours is purple. I was yet to find a stay put lipstick in my favourite purple hues – all I own in the purple department was some amazing lip glosses, funnily enough from Freedom Makeup’s sister brand Makeup Revolution. When I saw this lipstick on the website with its seemingly dark purple hues and it’s description as an ‘interstellar out of this world purple’ I got a bit excited about it!
When the lipstick arrived, I was so disappointed. The shade was more of a midnight blue and was sparkly, where as on the website the shade looked like a creamy matte colour. Again, the softness of the lipstick was brilliant, but I just knew this would look terrible on me.
And I wasn’t wrong! The pigment is not strong enough for this bold colour and it completely washed me out. Emma said I looked like a dead girl – I actually have to agree with her! Such a shame as if the pigment in this were stronger and if the lipstick were matte rather than sparkly, I think it would have worked a lot better – straight in the bin with this one!
Knowing I was taking a bit of a risk with the purple lipstick, I also decided to play it safe with a purple lip gloss. I had already heard great things about the Pro Melts and I could not wait to give them a go. The product photography on the website showed me a really gorgeous vibrant purple and I prayed that this was exactly what I got…
Look at that gorgeous shade! It was exactly as I had hoped and I could not wait to put it on! The consistency of this Pro Melt was thick and gloopy, but it wasn’t too sticky. It went on really well and only needed one layer of application to get the shade to be as bright as I wanted it to be.
As you can see you get a lovely juicy shine with this product! After a little while, the shade dulls down on your lips and you get a more solid colour. I reapplied this once during the day and I got a gorgeous thick colour that withheld most of my eating and drinking during the day. I was super impressed! Definitely worth it, and at only £3.00, I feel like I got the worlds best bargain!
I was so ready to click off the page and go to my basket to buy all the above items and then I spied this beauty. On the site, this shade looks like a deep, rich browny red. I don’t often get to try those kind of shades so I also popped this one in my basket and I was so glad I did.
This gorgeous, pigment rich lip melt was exactly what I wanted – again quite gloopy to put on and a bit sticky, but still after one application gave me a gorgeous coverage. But it wasn’t the browny-red I thought it would be! When I put the lip melt on, it was actually more of a raspberry red – and I loved it!
This shade is my perfect summer shade! I love the way it sits on my lips and how it builds during the course of the day with one extra application just after lunch. It doesn’t dry out my lips like some of my more expensive reds do and it left my lips feeling beautiful! A definite A* from me!
So here’s some more shots of me out on the road wearing my two favourite buys from Freedom Makeup!
