Swimsuit or Bikini? Being Body Positive at the Beach*

Swimsuit or Bikini? Being Body Positive at the Beach*

I know what you’re thinking. “Lottie, it’s January, what the hell are you doing thinking about swimwear?!” Well my pal, January tends to be a bit of a body negative time for us all, and even more so when you think about hitting the beach in Summer. Now I’m the kind of radical, fat babe that likes to wear a bikini to the beach. Sometimes though, it’s just less stress and more comfort to wear a really nice swimsuit. I know, it’s an abstract concept but stick with me. Instead of worrying about how my body looks in swimwear, I simply look for swimsuits that will fit my body as it is right now. And when I find fashionable options, well – it makes me feel good!

I know I don’t need to tell you, but every body is a beach body. My plus size body sometimes wants to wear a swimsuit. Wearing a swimsuit instead of a bikini doesn’t mean I’ve decided to hide. It just means that I fancied wearing one that day. It really isn’t that deep! The body positive world can sometimes pressure you into thinking that you’re only bo-po if you bare all. That’s just not the case lads! A big part of learning to love your body is thinking about how it looks in various states of undress. I’ve sometimes felt my most body positive when wearing a swimsuit over a bikini. That’s nothing to do with feeling confident (remember this blog post on how confidence is a myth?). It’s more to do with feeling positive. Sometimes I feel fierce in a bikini – other times, it’s a swimsuit. Whatever I choose to wear, it needs to be fashion-forward. Which begs the question….

Can you get a plus size, fashion-forward swimsuit?

When I’ve looked into getting a swimsuit before, the options weren’t always great. I want classic designs, fashion forward designs and things that will make me feel great when I’m wearing next to nothing. Do you go for straps or strapless? Mesh panels or full coverage? Embellished or not? I swear, this swimwear malarkey can be a bit of a minefield. So, I’ve been checking out what’s on the market already and came across Simply Beach. I heard they were a straight sized brand that focused on fashion-forward swimsuits – so imagine my delight when I saw their plus size section!

Simply Beach’s plus size line goes up to a UK 24. There’s definite room to grow for this brand – size 24+ girls need swimwear too – but when I checked out what was on offer, the selection was pretty good. There’s a lot of high-end pieces in the collection. I’m delighted about that, because plus size babes aren’t always given high-end options when spending on clothes! What better time to be bougie as hell than when buying a swimsuit, eh lads?

If you wanted to go for a bikini, they’ve got a great range of those too. Their bikini tops go up to a J cup and a 40 back (again, some room for improvement there too) and there’s plenty of options to mix and match with. You can also find cover ups, beach towels and even sunglasses there too!

My top 8 picks!

These are the items that really caught my eye – check out these babes!

1. Charmline – £65.40
2.Seaspray – £42.00
3. Seaspray – £53.90
4. Miraclesuit – £140.00
5. Pour Moi Bikini Top – £28.00
6. Pour Moi Bikini Bottoms – £22.00
7. Panache Bikini Top – £14.40
8. Panache Bikini Bottoms – £7.60

I know that when it comes to Summer, I’ll be hitting Simply Beach’s range of swimsuits pretty hard. I can’t wait to see what this brand does for plus size customers! Whatever you wear at the beach this year, remember that you’re there to relax and live your best life – you just happen to have less clothing on than usual! Make sure you put your feet up, grab a cocktail and enjoy the rays. And don’t forget your sunscreen!

I have just started swimming and have to admit that I struggled to find a swimsuit for me – I went for one of the shorty all in ones in the end

So with you on this! I prefer a one piece after an incident in which I maybe almost lost both my top and bottoms at a water park in one go haha, it just feels safer!
